What are my therapy options?

Coaching and mentoring are similar but different and I feel it’s important to understand the difference. Both coaching and mentoring are development techniques working on a one-to-one basis that involve listening, questioning, clarifying and reframing, in order to enhance an individual’s skills, knowledge or work performance.

Coaching and mentoring are developmental processes by which an individual gets support while learning to achieve a specific personal or professional result or goal.


Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.

Coaches have a strong belief in individuals learning things for themselves, in their own way, and that it is the coach’s role to facilitate the individual’s potential to do so.

It’s a skilled activity, which should be delivered by people who are trained to do so.

You should always look for a professionally qualified coach and ask for written testimonials and if possible to speak to the coach’s past clients for reference.


A mentor will act as an advisor, suggesting new paths for the individual to take. To mentor effectively, you must possess an in-depth appreciation and knowledge of the subject on which you are advising.

A mentor can often been seen in the role as a teacher/pupil whereas a coach can be seen more on par with the individual.

Mentoring is about teaching an individual on a particular subject whereas coaching allows the individual to find his or her own answers.


Therapy helps you heal past trauma or issues so you can think and feel in a different way. There are many different types of therapy and all of them will help you to change how you feel.

Psychotherapy focuses on healing relationships, grief/loss, chronic illness, abuse/trauma, PTSD, mood imbalances, child therapy, attachment issues, behaviour issues, anxiety, adoption/foster care issues, divorce and difficult life transitions or change.

Therapists include psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed professional counselors, psychiatric nurses, or other licensed professionals with mental health training.

Psychotherapy is more long-term than counseling and focuses on a broader range of issues.

You should seek out a professionally qualified psychotherapist to help heal past trauma and childhood issues. Also ask for testimonials and trust your gut feeling. The important thing is to be able to resonate with your therapist so you can ‘open up’ in an honest way.

Psychotherapy focuses on working with clients for a longer-term than counselling and draws from insight of the individual to determine emotional problems and difficulties.


Counselling is a shorter term therapy and focuses more around behaviour patterns. It’s is a talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues.

  • Rehabilitation counselling.
  • Mental health counselling.
  • Substance abuse counselling.
  • Educational counselling

Seek out a trained councilor in your area, make sure you can connect with him/her and be sure that you can be honest with them.
